Mixing idol and magical girl elements, this unique series follows Tiara as she enrolls in her prestigious Flora Girls' Academy for Witches where young women train to master magic and defeat the evil magic monsters that threaten their world. Tiara finds herself teamed up with her childhood friend Rosetta, the sporty but not very bright Lavie, the stoic Ashley, and the book obsessed Lynette. Unfortunately, if the group's grades don't improve, they'll risk being expelled together! The new friends soon find themselves leaning not only only each other, but their fellow students and seniors, as they navigate a world powered by music-made magic. This series is a multimedia franchise, and the story is slightly altered depending on which version you follow. So far, there is a manga, an anime, a teased smartphone game, and an unreleased/planned novel. There's no romance, and though there is some action and of course idol performances, the series leans more towards being slice-of-life in tone. The humor is a bit adult at times, though nothing rude or explicit, so it's still suitable for younger viewers. STATS:WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:If you enjoy softer idol series, but wouldn't mind a bit of magic and action thrown in, this series will definitely fill up your bucket list. It's a great introduction series to the world of idols for anyone who wants to go in the other direction as well. SIMILAR SERIES:

This is the first season in the Girls X Heroine franchise. ABOUT:Five girls are recruited to become idols, who use their idol performances to charge up and become Miracle Tunes, girls with magical powers who must collect and purify the Sound Jewels. The Demon King has stolen the sound jewels, which are used to calm human hearts, and has turned them dark for his own use. The series tends to focus on the girls' daily lives, friendships, and character development, with the idol and magical girl elements taking a back seat. This series blends live action tokusatsu with magical girl and idol elements for a very unique show. STATS:LANGUAGES: Japanese dub, English subs LENGTH: 51 Episodes STATUS: Completed WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:ABOUT:Three very different young girls - tomboyish and determined Hikaru, temperamental and serious Umi, and the gentle genius Fuu - are thrown together when they're sucked into another universe called Cephiro. The three are tasked with rescuing Cephiro's princess in order to save the kingdom and be go home - but not everything is as it seems, and the girls must risk their own humanity in order to save their new friends and get back to their loved ones. In some ways, MKR is seen as an early reconstruction of the Magical Girl genre, given it is much darker thematically. Warnings & Controversies:This series is quite violent and deals with themes of death and murder. Because of that, we'd only recommend this to mature viewers. The second arc of the anime departs quite significantly from that of the manga, including different villains and the overall darker plot. Not everyone was happy with this change. STATS:If you're looking for a blend of J-pop songs by genuine bands, seriously epic battle scenes (including mechs,) and more than a few magical girl devices, this is definitely a good place to start! ABOUT:Four young girls decide to audition to become the 77th generation of idol trainees, vying for a spot in the intergalactic traveling idol group, AKB0048. But it won't be as easy as just dancing and singing. Humanity is ruled by a totalitarian government, and all entertainment has been banned, and the DES - an elite military group - will do anything to stop the AKB0048 girls from performing. So besides the usual singing, dancing, and fan meets that idols do, these girls must also learn martial arts, weapon skills, and develop their powerful idol auras. The group is based around the actual J-pop group AKB48 and the subsequent sub- and sister groups. In the Japanese dubs, the Voice Actresses are real-world group members, and the characters take 'stage names' from both their actresses and other real-world group members - people who, in-universe, are what inspired AKB0048 to exist.
ABOUT:If you combined an RPG playthrough with a Chill Magical Girl series, you'd get Endro~! Four best friends join Adventurer School, to learn magic and fight evil - only they're completely unaware their teacher is also their arch nemesis from the future! This often trope-busting series features an almost entirely female cast, from the cute girls battling evil demons to the chibi demon lord herself. The girls aren't particularly deep or overly unique, but they definitely do things at their own pace. While it's far from conventional, if you're after an adult-oriented, nerdy show that also packs a punch in the literal sense, this could be the show for you. |
