Rated R16 - Contains fan-service, adult themes, and other content which may disturb or offend. ABOUT:26-year-old Ureshiko has spent her life protecting the town that she loves, as the magical girl Agnes. But the magical girl powers-that-be don't want a magical adult and send in a younger girl to force Ureshiko into retirement by causing chaos throughout the town. At the same time, Ureshiko faces normal adult issues. She's recently divorced and, having spent her life as a housewife, is exploring the world of adulthood for the first time. Plus, she's falling for a younger man - despite the fact her first kiss will strip her of her magic. There's a few dystopian and deconstruction-style story twists, but overall the series is a lighthearted and nostalgic take on what happens when a magical girl grows up. It does contain a lot of fanservice, often due to Agne's outfit being made for a child rather than an adult, as well as plenty of adult jokes and themes. STATUS:

ABOUT:Yūna, Mimori, Fū, and Itsuki are middle schoolers, and members of their school's Hero Club. They spend their days helping those in need in their school and town. One day, they're transported to a forest full of Vertex monsters that seek to destroy the guardian of humanity, the Shinju. and thus humanity itself. The Taisha - an organisation that protects the Shinju - grant magical powers and transformations to Yuna and her friends, in order to right the Vertex and save the world. Unfortunately for Yuka and her friends, nothing is as easy or simple as it may appear. Power requires sacrifice, and they may not be willing to give it - or even have a choice in it at all. This series is grimdark with a focus on deconstruction which, like many others in the genre, does not show up until several episodes in. TRIGGER WARNINGS & CONTROVERSIESABOUT:This series is a franchise, where in each season, an new version of 'Princess Momo', from another, magical world, is adopted by a human couple on the 'ground' (earth). In each series, teenage Momo is tasked with helping others to realize and achieve their dreams. In order to do so, she is given the ability to transform into an adult version of herself, complete with a disguise or job relating to the scenario at hand. She has varying degrees of magic skill, and is accompanied by fairy/animal guides. Officially, the two series originally had the same name, with the first being simply Magical Princess Minky Momo (also known as 'Sky Momo'.) Part way through, the second series was renamed as Magical Princess Minky Momo: Hold on to Your Dreams (also known as 'Sea Momo'.)The third series is a manga rather than an anime, and is called Miracle Dream Minky Momo. This series, while visually very cute and initially intended to sell toys to young girls, contains many dark scenes, adult themes, and a lesser degree of genre deconstruction. It is credited as being the first anime to introduce such themes, and open the door to modern, much darker and more adult deconstructions. In many ways, it makes the series a much more realistic and believable take on magical girls than most. However, it is not suitable for a younger audience. TRIGGER WARNING (CONTAINS SPOILERS)ABOUT:In a world with magical girls saving lives, mundane high school student Yuko unexpectedly wakes up to find herself with demon horns! It turns out, she's not so mundane after all - she comes from a line of demons, cursed by another clan to be forever in poverty. In order to restore her clan and break the curse, Yuko must defeat a Magical Girl. Soon, Yuko's classmates - including an incredibly strong, yet self-proclaimed "weak" magical girl Momo - are helping Yuko to power up and find a foe to defeat. Unfortunately for them, trouble doesn't stop for training! The series is highly comedic and slice-of-life, and while it's overall very light hearted, it's definitely aimed at a more mature audience due to the comedic style and the way it deconstructs and parodies many traditional magical girl tropes. There's also fanservice, though it's largely shown as comedy. STATS:LANGUAGES: Japanese dub, English Sub LENGTH: 12 episodes or 6 manga volumes STATUS : Complete (too soon to be renewed or canceled as of 10/2020.) WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:ABOUT:Three very different young girls - tomboyish and determined Hikaru, temperamental and serious Umi, and the gentle genius Fuu - are thrown together when they're sucked into another universe called Cephiro. The three are tasked with rescuing Cephiro's princess in order to save the kingdom and be go home - but not everything is as it seems, and the girls must risk their own humanity in order to save their new friends and get back to their loved ones. In some ways, MKR is seen as an early reconstruction of the Magical Girl genre, given it is much darker thematically. Warnings & Controversies:This series is quite violent and deals with themes of death and murder. Because of that, we'd only recommend this to mature viewers. The second arc of the anime departs quite significantly from that of the manga, including different villains and the overall darker plot. Not everyone was happy with this change. STATS: |
