Mixing idol and magical girl elements, this unique series follows Tiara as she enrolls in her prestigious Flora Girls' Academy for Witches where young women train to master magic and defeat the evil magic monsters that threaten their world. Tiara finds herself teamed up with her childhood friend Rosetta, the sporty but not very bright Lavie, the stoic Ashley, and the book obsessed Lynette. Unfortunately, if the group's grades don't improve, they'll risk being expelled together! The new friends soon find themselves leaning not only only each other, but their fellow students and seniors, as they navigate a world powered by music-made magic. This series is a multimedia franchise, and the story is slightly altered depending on which version you follow. So far, there is a manga, an anime, a teased smartphone game, and an unreleased/planned novel. There's no romance, and though there is some action and of course idol performances, the series leans more towards being slice-of-life in tone. The humor is a bit adult at times, though nothing rude or explicit, so it's still suitable for younger viewers. STATS:WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:If you enjoy softer idol series, but wouldn't mind a bit of magic and action thrown in, this series will definitely fill up your bucket list. It's a great introduction series to the world of idols for anyone who wants to go in the other direction as well. SIMILAR SERIES:

Luckily for the trio, they bump into Misa, a helpful girl who teaches them how to use the Imagination-powered weapons that will defeat the aliens and save their town. Unfortunately, nothing is quite as cute or innocent as it seems, with plenty of twists and turns to come. This series is a low-budget, Indie production that celebrates the odd nature of creativity and culture, and has a distinctively Harajuku-inspired flare. It's very comedic, and doesn't take itself seriously at all. It also features adult humor and darker themes, especially towards the end, and may not be suitable for younger viewers. Hikaru is soon joined by more Precure friends, and sets off in Lala's space ship to explore the universe and save the Princesses. Along the way, they meet more foes and friends alike. This series introduces new ideas never before seen in Precure - for example, there's singing during transformation scenes, and the majority of episodes end in cliffhangers. Both were controversial additions among fans. It also includes the first dark-skinned main character Cure. However, it still retains the romance-free, upbeat attitude with plenty of slice-of-life and comedy moments, just like all the Precure before it. This series brings with it some of the best fighting scenes in Precure, and plenty of slice-of-life comedy, but is also known for being one of the most modern and relevant stories to date - it includes issues like gender, identity, and parenthood. It is also an anniversary season, and features several crossover episodes, so may not be suitable for a new Precure audience. |
