ABOUT:Secret Jouju is a long-running Korean animated series with two notable reboots. The first part (s1-7) follow Fairy Jouju who turned herself into a Human princess in order to experience the life she usually granted to non-magical girls. The series follows Jouju's attempts and eventual success at regaining her power, learning to be a Princess, and saving a Prince. In order to success, Jouju must attend Princess school, and follow the Secret Diaries instructions, completing difficult tasks with the help of her new friends and limited powers. At the same time, there's rivalries and those who intend to stop her. The soft reboot (s8-13) follows a new Jouju. This one is princess of the fairies, until a bad spell bound her to the human realm. Jojou and her friends must discover how to return Jouju to her rightful place, and use their magic and wits to fight and evil witch who intends to stop them. Both original series feature the same base cast, similar plotlines, and repeat several of the mini-arcs. The latter series has a much larger cast, and better CGI, but isn't as funny. The third series - titles Guardians of Star - is totally new. A new Jouju journeys across the realms to collect the 11 Godess Stars. She's joined by a totally new cast of friends, a guide-cat/fairy. At the same time, she attends a regular human school and has her own human aspirations, which is something the previous incarnations lacked. ABOUT:ChaCha is a witch-in-training. She's clumsy, forgetful, and regularly summons the wrong thing (largely due to the words sounding the same, similar, or puns.) But when her friends are in trouble, ChaCha is the first person to lend a hand. ChaCha's friends are equally magical - a young boy descended from werewolves named Riiya, a sometimes-mermaid named Marin, ChaCha's somewhat-rival magician Shiine, and a number of other magical creatures in training, along with their teachers. ChaCha and her friends are given magical devices by ChaCha's teachers, which allow ChaCha to transform into the Magical Princess, which boosts her powers. And it turns out, she needs all the help she can get, as Daimaō and his minions intend to wreak havoc on the land! It should be noted the the first two anime series are completely unique and act as "Prequels." The third series blends stories from the manga with new anime-only ones, while the fourth and fifth series follow the manga arcs. This series is very light hearted, slightly romantic, and non-violent. It contains many ministories focusing on the problem of the day, with the main arcs being less important. There's plenty of references to fairytales, particularly Western ones -ChaCha for example represents Red Riding Hood! STATS:Rated R16 - Contains fan-service, adult themes, and other content which may disturb or offend. ABOUT:26-year-old Ureshiko has spent her life protecting the town that she loves, as the magical girl Agnes. But the magical girl powers-that-be don't want a magical adult and send in a younger girl to force Ureshiko into retirement by causing chaos throughout the town. At the same time, Ureshiko faces normal adult issues. She's recently divorced and, having spent her life as a housewife, is exploring the world of adulthood for the first time. Plus, she's falling for a younger man - despite the fact her first kiss will strip her of her magic. There's a few dystopian and deconstruction-style story twists, but overall the series is a lighthearted and nostalgic take on what happens when a magical girl grows up. It does contain a lot of fanservice, often due to Agne's outfit being made for a child rather than an adult, as well as plenty of adult jokes and themes. STATUS:R16 - Contains nudity, violence, bad language, and other content which may disturb or offend. ABOUT:This series rides the line between being a parody, deconstruction, and genuine magical girl series. In Japan, every young girl is a magical one, except, apparently, for Apricot - and it's all she's ever wanted to be. The series follows her attempts to fulfill her dream, avoid her actual destiny, and the antics of her friends and rivals along the way. The cast is interesting and diverse, and it brings up many of the more controversial parts of traditional magical girls in a way few people ever consider. There's also the fun option of having it read left-to-right like a comic, or right-to-left like a manga! It is very adult, with a lot of (obscured) nudity, gore, discussions and references to sex, and other content which is not suitable for a young audience. STATUS:ABOUT:
STATUS:LANGUAGE: English LENGTH: 25 pages STATUS: Indefinite Hiatus WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:Beginners would definitely enjoy this as a soft, short introduction to the classic tropes of the genre. Current magical girl fans may enjoy seeing a new comic with old school themes by a new artist. SIMILAR SERIES:
