Arsu has always wanted to become a witch - but when her dreams come true, nothing is as good as it seems. ABOUT:When Arsu falls from a building, she finds herself transported into a realm filled with magic. Soon, she's enrolled i n magic school, but she quickly becomes disillusioned by the attitudes of the other witches and the enslavement of fairies. Arsu's acting out against the system results in Eva and Shira being cursed, and the three set out to explore the magic world and save themselves. In the process, they discover the many injustices, prejudices, and wars within the realm, and the three continue to learn about magic, their friendship, and themselves. While aesthetically it's much more steampunk and dark than a traditional magical girl, the themes, tropes, and attributes are definitely still there!

Romantic mystery meets a magical sci-fi, time-travel adventure in this adorable series! ABOUT:Space enthusiast Subaru discovers a super cute alien - who leads her to four magical girls, who've been tasked with collecting the part of his space ship! Things get complicated, as it seems each girl is from a different version of the world - Subaru remembers Aoi as being the one who left for another school, while Aoi remembers the opposite. Soon, Subaru finds herself falling for a mystery guy trapped in a garden, while the five girls battle with a powerful rival who wants the engine parts for himself. All the while, they're dealing with normal high school problems! If you're looking for a blend of J-pop songs by genuine bands, seriously epic battle scenes (including mechs,) and more than a few magical girl devices, this is definitely a good place to start! ABOUT:Four young girls decide to audition to become the 77th generation of idol trainees, vying for a spot in the intergalactic traveling idol group, AKB0048. But it won't be as easy as just dancing and singing. Humanity is ruled by a totalitarian government, and all entertainment has been banned, and the DES - an elite military group - will do anything to stop the AKB0048 girls from performing. So besides the usual singing, dancing, and fan meets that idols do, these girls must also learn martial arts, weapon skills, and develop their powerful idol auras. The group is based around the actual J-pop group AKB48 and the subsequent sub- and sister groups. In the Japanese dubs, the Voice Actresses are real-world group members, and the characters take 'stage names' from both their actresses and other real-world group members - people who, in-universe, are what inspired AKB0048 to exist.
Webcomic by Mary Cagle with Oskar Vaga In a world surrounded by a magical dome, designed to keep monsters at bay, young girls transform into magical warriors at night to keep those that get in from harming the cities' residents. But disaster is never far away, as Team Alchemical soon find out. About:Aside from that small blurb, it's difficult to sell this series without also spoiling it. The best we can say is that is deals with loss, trauma, and child soldiers. There's also a social media/fame element thrown in!
What we can definitely tell you is that the girls are very diverse - from conspiracy theorist protesters to passionate idols and even a rat. The ethnicities, backgrounds, and lifestyles of the characters vary greatly, and are artfully fleshed out through subtle references and background scenery. There's LGBTQ+ characters, plotlines, and quite a bit of queerbaiting moments alongside canon ships. Flying WitchDescribed as a 'healing anime', Flying Witch is a laid-back, relaxed story about Makoto, a young witch who moves in with her non-magical cousins in a small, rural Japanese town. She attends high school, meets local ghosts and spirits, follows her cat around town, attempts to solve various people's problems, and learns to love life in the simple countryside. Few series are as easily watchable and relaxing! Kiki's Delivery ServiceAlthough technically a film and not a show, Kiki's Delivery Service follows young Kiki as she leaves home for the first time.
Kiki's struggles with starting a buisness, feeling accepted, and accepting others and herself in return are all key parts of the story. There's a little more action than Flying Witch, but it's equally slow paced and relaxed otherwise. |
