Mixing idol and magical girl elements, this unique series follows Tiara as she enrolls in her prestigious Flora Girls' Academy for Witches where young women train to master magic and defeat the evil magic monsters that threaten their world. Tiara finds herself teamed up with her childhood friend Rosetta, the sporty but not very bright Lavie, the stoic Ashley, and the book obsessed Lynette. Unfortunately, if the group's grades don't improve, they'll risk being expelled together! The new friends soon find themselves leaning not only only each other, but their fellow students and seniors, as they navigate a world powered by music-made magic. This series is a multimedia franchise, and the story is slightly altered depending on which version you follow. So far, there is a manga, an anime, a teased smartphone game, and an unreleased/planned novel. There's no romance, and though there is some action and of course idol performances, the series leans more towards being slice-of-life in tone. The humor is a bit adult at times, though nothing rude or explicit, so it's still suitable for younger viewers. STATS:WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:If you enjoy softer idol series, but wouldn't mind a bit of magic and action thrown in, this series will definitely fill up your bucket list. It's a great introduction series to the world of idols for anyone who wants to go in the other direction as well. SIMILAR SERIES:

This ongoing webcomic by Alex Heberling follows a group of Magical Girls whose world-saving powers show up far too late to actually save anyone from the invading alien forces. Instead, Sami seeks out answers, and is soon joined by other girls with powers. Together, they seek to conquer their gifts, discover the origins of their powers and the aliens, and help what remains of humanity to survive. The post-apocalyptic scenes and their focus on survival rather than world-saving is definitely fresh and unique, and is very believably done. At the same time, there's still plenty of classic magical girl moments to go around, especially as these very different girls have to learn to work together. The girls range from late high school into adulthood, and the comic does depict adult issues like death, war themes, and mild gore. There's also some LGBTQ+ content. STATS:Rated R16 - Contains fan-service, adult themes, and other content which may disturb or offend. ABOUT:26-year-old Ureshiko has spent her life protecting the town that she loves, as the magical girl Agnes. But the magical girl powers-that-be don't want a magical adult and send in a younger girl to force Ureshiko into retirement by causing chaos throughout the town. At the same time, Ureshiko faces normal adult issues. She's recently divorced and, having spent her life as a housewife, is exploring the world of adulthood for the first time. Plus, she's falling for a younger man - despite the fact her first kiss will strip her of her magic. There's a few dystopian and deconstruction-style story twists, but overall the series is a lighthearted and nostalgic take on what happens when a magical girl grows up. It does contain a lot of fanservice, often due to Agne's outfit being made for a child rather than an adult, as well as plenty of adult jokes and themes. STATUS:ABOUT:Witches Chocolat and Vanilla are best friends and rivals to the witch world throne. To decide who succeeds, the two are sent to Earth to collect the hearts of humans, which give the witching world its magic. The catch - if they fall in love, they loose their magic! The two spend time in a human school, facing cultural differences and struggling with jealousy due to their friendship-turned-rivalry, as well as dealing with first loves. The concept is twisted, with the girls almost appearing as villains at some points of the story, but the comedy and plot twists regularly turn your expectations on their head. They face stigmas, discover inequalities within their own world, and are made to reconsider their own prejudices and worldviews. STATS:ABOUT:The Wonder Planet is a Star planet divided into seven kingdoms. Sunny Kingdom Princess twins, Fine and Rein, discover that their world is in danger of falling into darkness, as the Sun's Blessing which keeps them together is failing. Princess Grace, who prevented the same disaster some years ago, gifts Fine and Rein with Prominence, which allows the twins to use magic that will save their world. The girls are also guided by Grace's fairy friend Poomo. At the same time, the girls are coming of age, and must attend and participate in contests pitching all the princesses of the planet against one another! The girls must face, defeat, and befriend these other competitors - oh, and there's a little bit of romance along the way! There's a lot of slapstick comedy, children's humor, and plenty of slice-of-life episodes with both everyday and magical adventures. The twins manage to create plenty of chaos even - or especially - when they aren't saving their universe. The series plot and villains evolves for the second series, with new villains and locations.
