Here at Magical Girl Club, we LOVE Precure - aka Pretty Cure, aka Glitter Force - and we know it can be daunting to begin with. While we do have a list of guides to where you SHOULD start watching (HERE), we also think it's worth mentioning the seasons you SHOULDN'T start with, too! Stand-Alone Seasons:Happiness ChargeNo season has received quite as much fan hate as Happiness Charge. Whether you consider it justified or not is down to personal opinion, but most fans will still agree it isn't the ideal starting point. Many of the plot points and tropes are very different from the rest of the franchise, and the overall tone is unique. This often leads to a skewed view, and those who don't like it may find themselves discouraged from starting a better season - and those who do like it may be discouraged when the others are so different. Hugtto PrecureHugtto is a beloved, highly-regarded season - it features on most fan's top 5 lists, and is known for it's unique tackling of modern day social issues in a family-friendly way. Unfortunately, being the 15th anniversary season, it is packed full with references to previous seasons, and even includes crossover episodes featuring previous generations of Precures. You don't actually need to see every season in order to understand Hugtto - just Futari Wa and Max Heart will do! Characters from both are involved heavily versus those from other seasons, who only really cameo. Without the other seasons, you may miss some of the subtler references, but it will be no less enjoyable overall. Still, it isn't the best starting point for a beginner! SEQUELS:A Precure rule-of-thumb - if it's got the same name as something else, only with extra words at the end, that means it's a sequel, or a sequel movie, and probably shouldn't be watched first. Futari Wa Precure Max HeartMax Heart is the sequel to the original Futari Wa Pretty Cure series. While there's new characters and theme changes, the show regularly references past events and incorporates concepts that don't carry much meaning without the original. And if you switch from the English dub first season to the Japanese sub sequel, you'll likely have trouble given the different names, in-jokes, and catch phrases. While it is definitely possible to watch and understand Max Heart without seeing the previous season, it won't be nearly as enjoyable, and may be extra confusing if you're totally new to the magical girl genre. Yes Precure 5 GOGOYes Precure 5 GOGO is the sequel to Yes Precure 5 - as far as the name goes, there's not a lot of difference between the two, so it could be very easy to pick the wrong one. GoGo relies far more on your knowledge of the previous season than MAX does, given certain characters relationships are changed and therefore affect the storyline quite heavily. For that reason, you do need to watch the previous season to understand it. The first season is dubbed, but it is difficult to find and no-one on our team has seen it, so we can't speak of how well it translates into the sequel. Crossover FilmsAnything with 'Star' and 'Movie'If it has 'STAR' in the movie title, that means it's a crossover film. Typically, they're not cannon to the seasons, so you don't really need to have seen them. However, you won't be anywhere near as invested in the characters, so they're nowhere near as enjoyable. All-Stars movies feature all previous cures. If anything, these are the best films to start with, because you may find yourself drawn to a particular team and can choose to watch their season from there. They often set up the most recent team as 'leads', with the others largely acting as cameos, so if you're only seen one season it's a good idea to start with their film first. Dream- and Super-Stars, and the films following, feature only Cures from most recent 3 seasons. Knowledge of all three is ideal, as they're all given more equal amounts of screen time and importance compared to All-Stars films. Hopefully, that helped you figure out where NOT to start!
