Mixing idol and magical girl elements, this unique series follows Tiara as she enrolls in her prestigious Flora Girls' Academy for Witches where young women train to master magic and defeat the evil magic monsters that threaten their world. Tiara finds herself teamed up with her childhood friend Rosetta, the sporty but not very bright Lavie, the stoic Ashley, and the book obsessed Lynette. Unfortunately, if the group's grades don't improve, they'll risk being expelled together! The new friends soon find themselves leaning not only only each other, but their fellow students and seniors, as they navigate a world powered by music-made magic. This series is a multimedia franchise, and the story is slightly altered depending on which version you follow. So far, there is a manga, an anime, a teased smartphone game, and an unreleased/planned novel. There's no romance, and though there is some action and of course idol performances, the series leans more towards being slice-of-life in tone. The humor is a bit adult at times, though nothing rude or explicit, so it's still suitable for younger viewers. STATS:WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:If you enjoy softer idol series, but wouldn't mind a bit of magic and action thrown in, this series will definitely fill up your bucket list. It's a great introduction series to the world of idols for anyone who wants to go in the other direction as well. SIMILAR SERIES:

ABOUT:Rito, Mari, and Kotoko dream of opening a streetwear shop CALLED park, in the FASHIONABLE Urahara district, filled with cuteness, Japanese culture, and creativity. Unfortunately, Japan is about to be invaded by aliens, who wish to eat up all the creativity and culture of Earth. And so, their dreams have to be put on hold! Luckily for the trio, they bump into Misa, a helpful girl who teaches them how to use the Imagination-powered weapons that will defeat the aliens and save their town. Unfortunately, nothing is quite as cute or innocent as it seems, with plenty of twists and turns to come. This series is a low-budget, Indie production that celebrates the odd nature of creativity and culture, and has a distinctively Harajuku-inspired flare. It's very comedic, and doesn't take itself seriously at all. It also features adult humor and darker themes, especially towards the end, and may not be suitable for younger viewers. STATS:By writer-artist duo known as KaiJu ABOUT:It's been 15 years since magical girl Shimmer Shimmer Sky Patcher Chimaka was defeated. Now an adult, Chimaka has plenty of other things to worry about, like her job as a rock scientist, and her grief over loosing her 'destined' boyfriend. But unfortunately for Chimaka, evil doesn't care about a woman's needs, and Chimaka finds herself suiting up once again - that is, if she can. In order to do that, though, Cimaka must once again learn to believe in love and magic, and so her new friend Pip decides to give her a hand. This LGBT+ comic is a story of finding love in unexpected places, as much as it is about sel-flove. NOTE: This series is rated R16 due to language and nudity. https://sparklermonthly.com/series/mahou-josei-chimaka/ ABOUT:As a baby, Yucie was adopted by a Knight, who retired to the country to raise her. Years later, Yucie - now a cursed 17-year-old stuck in a 10-year-old's body - is sent to the prestigious Princess Academy. Yucie, who was raised in the country, struggles to fit in - but she isn't the only one. Yucie, along with four other candidates - Glenda, Elmina, Cocoloo and Beth - must compete to find the Crystal Flowers that are scattered across the Human, Demon, Spirit, and Fairy realms. Each girl has her own motivations for doing so. Once the task is complete, the Crystal Flowers will complete the Eternal Tiara. The Tiara will then choose the Platinum Princess, who will rule the realms with great power, from the five candidates. Unfortunately, nothing is quite as it seems, and everything they want and believe in will be turned on it's head. At the same time, they must all complete the school's curriculum, which includes community service. Being from Earth, Yucie's magic comes from learning and magical objects, which puts her at a disadvantage to the others whose power is inherent. But Yucie's wit, positive attitude, and perseverance leads to the girls helping each other out in order to complete each task. This series is dramatic, and comedic, with many twists and turns. There is even a romantic side-story as well! ABOUT:Miho, a 9-year-old girl who wishes to make manga, is given two magical dinosaur toys - who are actually fairies from another realm - and a magic skecthbook by a mysterious stranger. These toys allow Miho to become a grown up, whom she names Fancy Lala. As Lala, she can use her sketchbook to create manga and drawings that come to life. Through a series of events, Lala becomes a singer and is scouted by several production companies, rising quickly to satrdom. However, none of Miho's family or friends know of this, and Miho soon finds herself struggling to maintain her ruse. Miho does use her powers for her own gain, but also to solve problems and help out those around her. STATS:WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:As part of the Studio Pierrot franchise, this series is a true magical girl classic that continues to influence the genre, despite being a late entrant. It's cute, soft, and uncomplicated.
