Mixing idol and magical girl elements, this unique series follows Tiara as she enrolls in her prestigious Flora Girls' Academy for Witches where young women train to master magic and defeat the evil magic monsters that threaten their world. Tiara finds herself teamed up with her childhood friend Rosetta, the sporty but not very bright Lavie, the stoic Ashley, and the book obsessed Lynette. Unfortunately, if the group's grades don't improve, they'll risk being expelled together! The new friends soon find themselves leaning not only only each other, but their fellow students and seniors, as they navigate a world powered by music-made magic. This series is a multimedia franchise, and the story is slightly altered depending on which version you follow. So far, there is a manga, an anime, a teased smartphone game, and an unreleased/planned novel. There's no romance, and though there is some action and of course idol performances, the series leans more towards being slice-of-life in tone. The humor is a bit adult at times, though nothing rude or explicit, so it's still suitable for younger viewers. STATS:WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:If you enjoy softer idol series, but wouldn't mind a bit of magic and action thrown in, this series will definitely fill up your bucket list. It's a great introduction series to the world of idols for anyone who wants to go in the other direction as well. SIMILAR SERIES:

Now, her idol dreams may be toast! The series is split into two parts, and is the spinoff of another visual novel series, The Fruit of Grisaia. Although not explicit, this game does contain references and images that may not be suitable for younger viewers. Maho Girls is the 13th original series in the Precure franchise. For more information, including how to watch Precure, see HERE. ABOUT:Middle school student Mirai has always believed in magic, and with he trusty teddy bear Mofurun, discovers a junior witch named Riko has fallen into the local forest and is lost. The two discover they share identical necklaces, and Riko reluctantly befriends Mirai. Meanwhile, the evil Dokuroxy sends his minions to Earth to find the Diamond linkle stone, which Riko also came to Earth to find. To stop Dokuroxy from finding it, and saving the people his minions attack, Riko and Mirai discover they have the power to transform into Pretty Cure, the legendary warrior magicians. The two girls are now tasked with defeating Dukuroxy and collecting all of the linkle stones scattered across Earth and the Magic realm. In order to better use their powers, Mirai joins Riko in Magic School, where the two must become friends and learn to work together if they are to save anyone. This series is slightly comedic, very slice-of-life, and themed around magic and gemstones. STATS:WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:Lovers of magic school series like Harry Potter will adore this feminine yet feminist take on the genre. It also still follows the general constructions of a classical magical girl storyline, and goes back to the original roots of Pretty Cure, which also featured a magical girl duo/trio. SIMILAR SERIES:
ABOUT:As a baby, Yucie was adopted by a Knight, who retired to the country to raise her. Years later, Yucie - now a cursed 17-year-old stuck in a 10-year-old's body - is sent to the prestigious Princess Academy. Yucie, who was raised in the country, struggles to fit in - but she isn't the only one. Yucie, along with four other candidates - Glenda, Elmina, Cocoloo and Beth - must compete to find the Crystal Flowers that are scattered across the Human, Demon, Spirit, and Fairy realms. Each girl has her own motivations for doing so. Once the task is complete, the Crystal Flowers will complete the Eternal Tiara. The Tiara will then choose the Platinum Princess, who will rule the realms with great power, from the five candidates. Unfortunately, nothing is quite as it seems, and everything they want and believe in will be turned on it's head. At the same time, they must all complete the school's curriculum, which includes community service. Being from Earth, Yucie's magic comes from learning and magical objects, which puts her at a disadvantage to the others whose power is inherent. But Yucie's wit, positive attitude, and perseverance leads to the girls helping each other out in order to complete each task. This series is dramatic, and comedic, with many twists and turns. There is even a romantic side-story as well! ABOUT:ChaCha is a witch-in-training. She's clumsy, forgetful, and regularly summons the wrong thing (largely due to the words sounding the same, similar, or puns.) But when her friends are in trouble, ChaCha is the first person to lend a hand. ChaCha's friends are equally magical - a young boy descended from werewolves named Riiya, a sometimes-mermaid named Marin, ChaCha's somewhat-rival magician Shiine, and a number of other magical creatures in training, along with their teachers. ChaCha and her friends are given magical devices by ChaCha's teachers, which allow ChaCha to transform into the Magical Princess, which boosts her powers. And it turns out, she needs all the help she can get, as Daimaō and his minions intend to wreak havoc on the land! It should be noted the the first two anime series are completely unique and act as "Prequels." The third series blends stories from the manga with new anime-only ones, while the fourth and fifth series follow the manga arcs. This series is very light hearted, slightly romantic, and non-violent. It contains many ministories focusing on the problem of the day, with the main arcs being less important. There's plenty of references to fairytales, particularly Western ones -ChaCha for example represents Red Riding Hood! STATS: |
