ABOUT:![]() Catholic school student Meimi becomes Saint Tail by night, who uses slight of hand and magic tricks to return things that were wrongfully gained or stolen. However, the Police see her only as a thief, as does her classmate and son of the lead detective, Asuka Jr. Meimi's family life is also unusual - her father is a Magician, and her Mother a former thief herself. This, combined with the Catholic school training, and her friend Seira who is a nun-in-training, lead to some unique moments in Meime's life outside of thieving. The series is known by a few names: Mysterious Thief Saint Tail, Phantom Thief Saint Tail, The Sweet Tales of Saint Tail, and simply, Saint Tail. CONTROVERSY:![]() It's hotly debated whether or not this series is a magical girl. On the one hand, her shtick is doing magic tricks, meaning that they could theoretically be performed in the real world. However, her abilities and tricks tend to stretch well beyond the real of normality and possible physical feats - to the point of being comically extreme. Even canonically, some of these feats are considered highly impossible and potentially truly magical, and not simply sleight-of-hand as Meimi considers it.

ABOUT:![]() Elementary school student Amu feels as if she is hiding her true self from the world behind the 'cool and spicy' facade her Mother made for her. In reality, Amu is shy, has difficulty expressing herself, and desperately wants to wear something cute like her sister. One day, Amu wishes to know her true self, and later discovers three magic eggs - and from those eggs come Shugo Charas, representations of her would-be personalities. Shugo Charas allow their respective person to transform, with each Shugo Chara providing a relevant skill, costume, and power, as well as sometimes dramatic personality changes. However, the changes are not permanent, and their future selves may stop existing if the user does not work on themselves in the normal manner. The Elementary school's Gaurdians also have Shugo Charas of their own, and recruit Amu to help purify X Eggs, corrupted future selves of students. Life soon becomes quite complicated! STATS:LANGUAGES: Japanese EPISODES: 127 STATUS: Completed WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:![]() Shugo Chara puts a interesting spin on the classic magical girl concept, and adds in the magical boys that lot of people want to see more of. It's a great choice for viewers who want to keep the lightheartedness and romance of old favourites, but want something with a fresh-feeling story. SIMILAR SERIES:
ABOUT:In a world with magical girls saving lives, mundane high school student Yuko unexpectedly wakes up to find herself with demon horns! It turns out, she's not so mundane after all - she comes from a line of demons, cursed by another clan to be forever in poverty. In order to restore her clan and break the curse, Yuko must defeat a Magical Girl. Soon, Yuko's classmates - including an incredibly strong, yet self-proclaimed "weak" magical girl Momo - are helping Yuko to power up and find a foe to defeat. Unfortunately for them, trouble doesn't stop for training! The series is highly comedic and slice-of-life, and while it's overall very light hearted, it's definitely aimed at a more mature audience due to the comedic style and the way it deconstructs and parodies many traditional magical girl tropes. There's also fanservice, though it's largely shown as comedy. STATS:LANGUAGES: Japanese dub, English Sub LENGTH: 12 episodes or 6 manga volumes STATUS : Complete (too soon to be renewed or canceled as of 10/2020.) WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:This is the first season in the Girls X Heroine franchise. ABOUT:Five girls are recruited to become idols, who use their idol performances to charge up and become Miracle Tunes, girls with magical powers who must collect and purify the Sound Jewels. The Demon King has stolen the sound jewels, which are used to calm human hearts, and has turned them dark for his own use. The series tends to focus on the girls' daily lives, friendships, and character development, with the idol and magical girl elements taking a back seat. This series blends live action tokusatsu with magical girl and idol elements for a very unique show. STATS:LANGUAGES: Japanese dub, English subs LENGTH: 51 Episodes STATUS: Completed WHO SHOULD WATCH IT:ABOUT:![]() Ichigo is on a date with her crush when an unexpected earthquake strikes. At the same time, Ichigo is bathed in a strange light. The next day, she starts acting and reacting like a cat, and discovers she's been chosen by two young men - Ryou and Keiichirou - to become a Mew, people infused with the DNA of endangered animals and tasked with saving the world from the evil Chimera animals. Ichigo soon finds herself as the leader of the mews, a group of very unlikely friends. The five also run a cafe which acts as a base and mask for their vigilante activities. The series is available as an anime and a manga, the latter of which has a sequel series. There is also a reboot/short manga coming out later in 2020. ISSUES WITH THE DUB:![]() The first arc of Tokyo Mew Mew was dubbed as Mew Mew Power. Unfortunately, the dub was never completed - the entire second half of the anime, including the major storyline and romance conclusions - are only available in Japanese with English subs. Overall though, it's a decent dub for the early 2000s, and unlike THESE scandals, most fans don't mind which one you choose to watch, though it did cut out a few short scenes, censor bits to fit fit the more childish image the West had of anime at the time, and replaced most names and episode titles with English ones, for example Ichigo becomes Zoe.
