Calico is an upcoming Switch game where you play the role of a magical girl who sets up a cat cafe. The current release date is set for October 2020. Kickstarted in April 2019, the game allows you to set up shop, decorate your cafe and home, explore the surrounding neighborhood, make friends with the locals including witches and magical girls, and interact with local animals. The storyline is far from that of a traditional magical girl - however, the title, influences, tasks, and the aesthetic are very obviously inspired by the genre, so we've chosen to include it with the 'inspired' tag. You can follow their twitter (@calicogame) for regular updates.
Pixi Princess was an Android and Apple app for magical girl roleplay. It was originally released in August of 2014 but was closed in November 2015. A book is planned for release in 2020. ABOUT:The game revolves around five girls - Sakurai Kokoa (Pixy Cherry), Jinguuji Nobara (Pixy Rose), Aoi Minato (Pixy Pangie), Houen Tsubasa (Pixy Camellia) and Yurizono Shiori (Pixy Lily) - who must fight to save their world from darkness. Players could control all five girls in battle, as well as participated in conversations and slice-of-life experiences as regular girls. The series was intended to have a masculine audience and thus, contained a lot of fanservice. CONTROVERSY:ABOUT:This Korean animation follows Ari, a 5th grader who joins her school's Problem Solving Club, only to be given magical, evil-fighting powers by a mysterious hamster! Soon, Ari's club friends Suha and Woo are joining in the magical girl action too. Oh, and of course they have to do it all while falling in love! STATS:LANGUAGE: Korean (2 dubs,) English dub (incomplete), English subbed
Balala is a Chinese meta-series - Over the Rainbow is the first reboot season. If you'd like to read more about the franchise, see HERE. . Jessi doesn't fit in at her new boarding school - but she soon finds an entirely different universe, the Colorful Castle, and befriends the fairies there! Jessi also makes two human friends - Hayley and Amy - and the three girls embark on a mission to learn magic and save their fairy friends' kingdom from the evil Black Lord. It's a very slice-of-life, CGDCT style storyline, with relatively little cartoon violence - mostly, they rely on their intelligence, talking, magic, and spells rather than use physical attacks. Like every Balala season, typical magical girl tropes are approached with a different cultural perspective, resulting in a very unique team dynamic. For example, Jessi may have pink hair, but canonically, she's red-themed, with red attacks, items, and red clothes. Despite Jessi being the initial protagonist, that roles is shared fairly equally with both her human and later fairy Princess friends once everyone has been introduced. STATS:LANGUAGE: Chinese (dub & subs) English (incomplete subs)
